Himeji Honmachi CD District Redevelopment Project
１．Purpose of this this project
Himeji Castle and the area around the castle is an enormous zone where all kinds
of facilities are located, including art galleries, museums, a museum of literature,
libraries, a fortification center, and auditoriums. These facilities work as Himeji
City’s important hubs of beauty, knowledge, senses, creation, and viewpoints.
This project respects the history of these assets, and makes efforts to improve
their functions with times. Above all, these assets should be handed down to the
next generation. To achieve this, we believe that it will contribute to development of
this city to construct a project for completing functions that are lacking or needed.
２．Basic ideas
1) Adjustments to basic plans of maintenance of Himeji Castle ruins
2) Try to equip facilities that work as cultural heritages for the next generation with
respect for history, preservation, and handing down of castle ruins
３．Development goals
1) To enhance the castle’s value, taking its value into account as a special historic
site
2) To pay close attention to historic scenery inside the special historic landmark
3) To build hub facilities that relate to history, culture, or tradition of the castle and
Himeji City
4) To promote tourism in Himeji City
5) To make the city livelier with great convenience while keeping its dignity as a
gateway to the castle
４．Facility policies
1) Facilities to exhibit, provide services or opportunities to experience and learn,
leading to enlightenment of protection of cultural assets and historical
knowledge
2) Facilities regarding unique history, culture, and tradition of Himeji
3) Cultural, retail, and tourist facilities as connecting areas between the castle and
business districts
4) Hub facilities to raise the quality of visitors’ excursion and mobility with organic
cooperation among existing facilities
