Himeji Beet Project

Beets are a nutritional powerhouse, often referred to as ‘nature’s blood booster’ or a ‘miracle food.’ Packed with vitamins, potassium, fiber, and nitric oxide, these vibrant vegetables promote blood circulation, help regulate blood pressure, and aid in relieving edema, constipation, and boosting immunity. They also support skin health and enhance iron absorption.

During the Russo-Japanese War 120 years ago, Russian prisoners of war were held in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. Many of them were from rural areas and, in an effort to improve their meager diet, they planted Russian-specific red radishes (beets) on the banks of the Ikawa River.

There is a Himeji beet food tourism program centered around the beet restaurant ‘VERA & MILA’.
